How it works

A septic system is an on-site wastewater treatment solution for homes without a central sewer connection. Wastewater from the house flows into a septic tank, where solids settle to the bottom and oils or grease rise to the top, leaving a liquid layer in the middle. This liquid, called effluent, then flows into a drain field, where it slowly seeps through the soil. The soil naturally filters out harmful bacteria and nutrients, cleaning the water before it safely returns to the groundwater.
